Prepare a financial-hardship evidence packet

When paying a tax bill would interfere with basic living expenses, a clear explanation of your finances matters. Start with current evidence and a short account summary. This guide prepares the conversation; the IRS determines whether temporary hardship collection status applies.

Describe the financial change

Write a brief timeline showing when income fell, necessary expenses changed or another event affected payment ability. Keep the explanation factual and attach the relevant evidence, such as recent pay records or current bills. Avoid turning a temporary low balance into a claim about the entire year. A reviewer needs to understand whether the problem is short-lived, recurring or uncertain, and which amounts reflect actual current circumstances.

Create a consistent income-and-expense picture

Use the same period for income and expenses so weekly receipts are not compared with annual costs. Note irregular necessary bills separately and explain shared household payments. Include assets and debt information for the professional or agency review when requested. The IRS may require collection-information forms and supporting documents. Your own worksheet can help gather facts, but it does not decide which costs will be allowed in an official analysis.

Understand the question you are asking

Currently not collectible status concerns a temporary inability to pay, not cancellation of the balance. Ask what evidence is needed, what obligations continue and how future ability to pay may be reviewed. Also identify the nearest notice deadline and whether a different issue, such as a disputed balance, needs attention. Keep copies of financial submissions and written instructions. Do not treat a referral call as an approved collection delay.

Questions people ask

Does hardship status forgive the bill?

No. IRS guidance describes a temporary collection delay. The tax remains due, and interest and applicable penalties can continue.

Can I qualify because my bank balance is low today?

The agency evaluates financial circumstances and supporting information. A single account balance does not establish the full picture or guarantee eligibility.
